THE ZOMBIE APOCOLYPSE IS UPON US
I don’t know about you, but I am helplessly addicted to The Walking Dead, and I really couldn’t pinpoint the exact why. There is an infographic that you can find on Google that accurately depicts the roller coaster of emotions that you go through while watching an episode; the beginning of the show is quite slow, it picks up a bit, someone does something stupid (and you almost break your tv by throwing your shoe at the dumbass within the tv), you wonder why you even bother watching the show, zombies start gorging on internal organs and the massive cliffhanger begs you to continue watching into the next episode. By the end of the episode, you have suffered a massive stroke and a brain aneurysm. You may have also lost a perfectly good shoe in a tv. So why do we keep watching? The season 5 premiere in October 2014 gave The Walking Dead Emmy-worthy props as the highest rated show in cable television history (The Walking Dead Season 5 Premiere Breaks Ratings Record As The Most Watched Cable Show Of All Time, 2014). It’s pretty safe to say that the majority of North America’s 18-49 year old demographic looks forward to The Walking Dead.
There are quite a few factors that I enjoy about the show. First and foremost, the artistry is decadently morbid. The first episode had me in awe when there was a torso dragging itself across a lawn, intestines being dragged behind it. I wanted to vomit, sure, but it was so cool how the make-up artists did that! I also found out that all zombie extras have to go through zombie training, which goes to prove the show truly appreciates the acting craft of the zombie apocalypse. Next, the characters. I love Rick! Not that his character is anything to be desired, but he played the unrequited love interest of Kiera Knightley in Love Actually which had me interested in the first place. The character I miss the most is Andrea. She had her dumbass moments, and extreme stubborn moments, but she was a strong female character. I know these reasons and a few other reasons add up to the main reason why I make myself suffer through season after season, but again, I can’t pinpoint the exact why. All I know is I yell at the tv each and every episode and I feel like I need wine after the fact to calm down.
